You will need JDK 21, 22 or 23 to use the local Camunda 8 starter package. Use your preferred method to install the JDK, or download OpenJDK from its website.
Please note OpenJDK 24 & 25 are not yet supported.
1. Download the self managed starter package
Download and get familiar with Camunda 8 using the Camunda starter package, which includes everything you need:
- Desktop Modeler: drag-and-drop workflows, decisions, and forms alongside your IDE.
- Camunda 8 Run: lightweight all‑in‑one distribution for local development.
- Getting Started examples: deploy a real workflow in minutes with Java (Spring) and Node.js.

2. Start your developer environment locally
To start your local development cluster, take the following steps:
- Unzip the downloaded starter package file
- Open the Camunda Modeler
- Open your terminal or command line and navigate to the new folder. Run the following command based on your operating system:
camunda-start.bat
./camunda-start.sh
You will then see a success page with getting started options.
